Overview

About the Melt Flow Indexer

The Melt Flow Indexer is one of the most widely used instruments in plastic and polymer quality control. It determines the melt flow rate of a thermoplastic by extruding the molten material through a precision die under a specified load and temperature. The mass of polymer extruded in a fixed time (usually 10 minutes) is reported as the Melt Flow Index in grams per 10 minutes (g/10 min), giving a quick, reliable indication of a material’s molecular weight and flow behaviour.

Because melt flow rate directly affects how a polymer processes during injection moulding, extrusion and blow moulding, MFI testing is essential for incoming raw-material inspection, batch-to-batch consistency, compound and resin development, and the evaluation of recycled material. International Equipments manufactures the Melt Flow Indexer in both a robust manual model and a fully computerized model (KayJay 2006 AC) that automatically calculates MFR and MVR, stores results and improves repeatability.

FAQ

Melt Flow Indexer — FAQs

What is a Melt Flow Indexer (MFI tester)?
It measures the melt flow rate (MFR) or melt volume rate (MVR) of a thermoplastic by extruding molten polymer through a standard die under a specified load and temperature; the mass extruded over a set time shows how easily the polymer flows.
Which standards does it follow?
It is designed in accordance with ASTM D1238 and ISO 1133.
Which materials can be tested?
Common thermoplastics such as PP, PE, PS, ABS and nylon, plus compounded and recycled materials — ideal for incoming material checks and compound/resin QC.
What is the difference between the manual and computerized models?
The manual model measures MFR by weighing extruded cut-offs; the computerized KayJay 2006 AC adds an encoder and software to calculate MVR and MFR automatically, store results and improve repeatability.
Do you export the Melt Flow Indexer?
Yes. We export to more than 50 countries and have equipped over 10,000 laboratories in India and abroad.
